Introduction:

Conveniently located near several bourbon distilleries, this was one of the nicest commercial campgrounds we've stayed at recently.

The Basics:

Overall Rating: 4/5

Price per night / Discounts: $34 / 10% off with Good Sam

Campground website: Elkhorn Campground

Our Site #: 63

Privacy Rating (how spacious and private do the sites feel):

3.5/5: While this is still a commercial campground, and therefore we had less space than at most state and county parks, there was a reasonable distance between the sites. Although closer than we would like, we didn't feel as though we were on top of our neighbors.

Location Rating (accessibility to points of interest or to major highways):

4.25/5: If you're visiting the Lexington area because you want to visit the horse farms and bourbon distilleries, this is a great location. The campground was also close to downtown Frankfort, which offers all of the usual conveniences. As for access to downtown Lexington, it was about a 20 to 30 minute drive, depending on where we were headed. All in all, as close-to-the-city campgrounds go, it was pretty solid, and given all the other attractions that can be found nearby, it's a really good location.

Site Quality and Big Rig Accessibility Rating (utilities and accessibility of campground hook ups):

5/5: The site quality here was good. The sites had raised cement pads and patio areas, and included a picnic table. All utilities were well placed, and everything worked as expected. We had no trouble getting into our site and appreciated that the large trees that surrounded some of the sites were well maintained, and therefore did not create an obstacle to parking.

Technology and Customer Service Rating (online resources, reservations, and staff):

3/5: The campground's website looks like it was last updated in 1999 and is missing some important information, like the price per night. But, the folks who run the place are very nice and we had no issues with customer service when we got there. They just need to modernize their website.

Internet Availability Rating (Verizon coverage or campground wifi):

4/5: If they had wifi, we didn't even try it (most campgrounds are so lousy, it's not even worth it). Verizon worked fine.

Summary:

Overall, we were very happy with this park. While commercial campgrounds are never our favorites, this one was very well maintained, featured lots of open green spaces, and offered a reasonable distance between the sites. It was also conveniently located near the distilleries, a town where we could find everything we needed, and Lexington itself. We would stay here again.
